ICIMOD's mission is to help promote the development of an economically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystem and to improve the living standards of mountain populations in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region, the world's highest, most populous and fragile mountain region. Mountains are a vast storehouse of hydropower, timber, fuelwood, medicinal plants, minerals and water. The most important fact is that they are rich in terms of their ethnic diversity - there are over 1000 tribes in the Region, each with their unique cultural heritage, language, and time-tested adaptation mechanisms and indigenous knowledge.
In the face of prevailing constraints in mountain areas, ICIMOD is involved in interdisciplinary research and development activities in the following strategic areas in order to achieve a better quality of life for mountain people. Each section includes general information, an overview of ICIMOD's activities, relevant links and publications.
