    Background Information:
Research Lists IBM Lotus Software As A Leader
    In Team Collaboration Tools

IBM Lotus QuickPlace Recognized for Its Broad Range of Collaboration Support

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 11, 2002 -- IBM Corporation announced that Gartner, Inc., a technology research and advisory firm, has positioned Lotus software in the Leader quadrant for team collaboration support products in its recent Magic Quadrant research note.1 Gartner's Magic Quadrant places vendors in a particular market segment based on their vision and ability to execute that vision. The placement of Lotus software in the "Leader" category is based on the research firm's assessment of IBM Lotus QuickPlace, the Web-based team collaboration offering. According to Gartner, Leaders are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.
Lotus QuickPlace software, which helps power IBM Dynamic Workplaces, is used by cross-organizational and distributed teams within both large enterprises and small/medium businesses to maintain resources related to a common project. The information is shared in a common space where everyone can find and respond to the latest information. Designed for non-technical professionals, QuickPlace can be set up in minutes with minimal
technical training and allows any authorized user with a supported Web browser to participate in a secure environment.
"As companies become more distributed, customer demand has verified that the need for team collaboration tools is escalating," said Michael Loria, Director of Advanced Collaboration, IBM Lotus Software. "Moving beyond communication tools, employees also need to be able to collaborate on documents and presentations and capture discussions and project tasks on an ad-hoc basis. By saving this information in a team space, it can be incorporated into an organization's knowledge management strategy so employees can easily find and reuse the valuable experience of other teams."

The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the Leaders segment. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player segments may be the right match for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
